How do you see yourself?

Thank you for expressing interest in our daily phone study about how people see themselves in everyday life! We are currently recruiting participants on Prolific to participate in this study. If you accessed this page through Prolific, please follow the instructions below.

Study Overview & Instructions

  • You will be given a link to download a smartphone app, which you can use to record your daily experiences over the next 3 weeks.
  • The app will request permission to send notifications to you at various times of the day, to complete a 2-minute diary survey.
  • You will not incur any costs for receiving notifications.
  • You must have a smartphone (either an iPhone or an Android) to take part in this part of the study.

Experience-Sampling over 21 Days

  • We will notify you 2 times a day at quasi-random times. Please pick times when you expect to be around other people, but still have access to your phone.
  • When you get a notification, you can respond right away or snooze the notification so you can respond later.
  • Each diary task takes 2 minutes to complete. We ask you to complete 2 every day.
>
  • Your responses will be sent to our secure server over WiFi or your data plan.
  • A very small amount of data (e.g., a few kilobytes) will be used to send the response.
  • The study will continue until you have completed 42 surveys OR until 21 days have elapsed.

Compensation

  • The initial online questionnaire will take approximately 25 minutes to complete. You will receive $5 for completing this part.
  • For 3 weeks, you will receive $0.40 for completing each survey on your phone, up to $16.80 for completing 42 surveys.
  • At the end of 3 weeks, if you complete at least 85% of the surveys we send out, you will receive a final end-of-study survey that takes 10 minutes to complete. You will receive a bonus of $2.00 for this final part.
  • In total, you may receive up to $23.80 for completing all phases of this study, including the intake survey you have already completed on Prolific.
  • If you withdraw from the study, you will still be compensated for each survey you have already completed.

Technical Difficulties

If you encounter any technical difficulties during app setup, or think you may have made a mistake during setup, please notify us as soon as possible on Prolific or via this anonymous google form. We also recommend that you clear the local storage/cache for your app, and uninstall and reinstall the app to restart setup.

To begin, please install the smartphone app developed for this study, which was built on the open-source ExperienceSampler framework (Thai & Page-Gould, 2017).

Click here if you use iOS.
Click here if you use Android.

iOS Users

  • To install the iOS app via the Apple Store, please search Daily Studies About the Self on the App Store, or click the logo below to install the app (ios version 3.0).

Android Users

  • To install apps via the Google Play Store, please click the link below to access a test version of the app.

This is the easiest method. But if it doesn't work, you can install it manually:
  • To install apps manually outside of the Google Play Store, you will need to change your Security Settings to allow installation from "Unknown sources".
  • To do this, install the app using the android package file below, and then select your phone's Settings to install unknown apps.
  • If you see a message that says 'Unsafe app blocked: Apps from unknown developers can sometimes be unsafe', click More Details and Install Anyway.
  • You can change your phone's security settings back after installing the app. If you would prefer not to change your phone's security settings, please contact us on Prolific or through this anonymous google form to request a private, unlisted version of the app accessible from the Google Play Store. Please include your Prolific ID so we can respond.
